a pain to unfold

Completely agree with reviewer who complained about poor instructions. One needs a degree in math, or studied Pythagorus to unfold the stand. It's easy to put away, but the next time you want to take it out, you will have forgotten what you did, and can easily spend 5 minutes trying different things to get the desk to unfold properly. My much older sister wants a portable stand and I won't be buying this one for her -- she'd commit herself to an insane asylum before being able to unfold this stand.

nice stand, bad instructions

This is an exceedingly nice music stand. At 1 pound 14 oz (stand and case), it's very light yet sturdy. Folded up, the stand is 23 inches long, so not quite as compact as I would have liked. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because the usage instructions are so poorly written. Like the previous reviewer, I couldn't get the button mechanism to allow me to tilt the desk portion into the proper position. Turns out, one needs to put pressure on the button relative to the vertical tube, not try to compress the button mechanism straight across. In other words, grab the tube of the stand just below the desk portion and button mechanism, extend thumb up without moving fingers, then push on button - should release the ratchet.
Unfolding and refolding the desk portion can be a bit tricky. The instructions state “spread out a panel.” Not useful at all, so here is what you need to do. Each side of the desk has 3 parts: a tray, a pair of 9-inch slats, riveted together, and a pair of 6-inch slats, also riveted together. If not already in the up position, raise the 2 pairs of 9-inch slats to vertical. The distance from the base of the tray to the top of the slats should be about 17 inches. Leave the 6-inch slats down beside the tray. Now fold out the tray by rotating the tops of the two tray halves away from each other. The 6-inch slats become the diagonals of the desk.
Refolding the stand is the reverse of unfolding it. Push down on the center pivot points of the diagonals. This motion causes the trays to start moving together. Push the trays all the way together. At this point, the 9-inch slats should be pointing straight up and may be left in that position. Use the button mechanism to fold the desk portion of the stand back down to lie parallel to the vertical tubes.
Remember, don’t force anything!

flawed design in this music stand

I wanted a lightweight easily portable black music stand. This is all of those things, but it has a design flaw that really detracts from using it. One is supposed to flip over the music tray into the proper position by pressing a button but this does not work at all. I had to take a screwdriver and dismantle the button mechanism in order to get the stand to be totally upright. Obviously I am not going to do this every time I go somewhere with the stand, so this detracts from portability and is really disappointing. I'm regretting that I bought this online instead of trying out stands at my local music store. Buyers beware
