Realist is an extremely popular brand amongst bassists. Their Copperhead pickup has been recommended for its rich, powerful, and well-balanced sound. With its introduction to Shar Music, we wanted to rigorously test and evaluate the pickup our selves.
How does the Copperhead pickup sound compared to other industry leading pickups? Let us know your thoughts below!

I’ve always associated the Fishman name with Fishman Piezo which, to me, sounds like a couple of empty soda cans with the bottoms cut off being forcefully crumpled onto the sides of my head. Because I’m not a masochist, I never particularly enjoyed that sound. So, for Fishman’s benefit, I’m very pleasantly surprised to relate how good I think the Full Circle pickup sounded! In this video demo, I thought the Full Circle was the best sounding of the bunch, closely followed by the Lifeline. However, experience has taught me that I am sure to enjoy the Lifeline more in my own actual use.
I absolutely love the sound to the Copperhead on my cello, so I was surprised by how relatively dead it sounded in this video. This makes me wonder a few things:
1) Most importantly, how was the sound of the pickups recorded? I assume a straight signal from each pickup to a DI splitter with one half going to that adorable Fishman amp in the background and the other Direct To YouTube, as t’were. However, without a description for the video as to the audio setup, this is mere speculation.
2) What are Jack & Michael listening to when making their judgements? The Fishman combo amp? Other off-screen monitor speakers? Something else completely?
3) Is there that much character difference between the Copperhead cello and bass models? Where the cello sounds full and complete but the bass sounds like it’s got a 2-pole low-pass filter kneed at ~500 Hz?
4) Jack, how do you get your beautiful hair?
