PEARL NICKEL
Scales for Strings Book One

I have used this for the first scale book for my students after they have completed learning all the notes on the four strings, including high and low second fingers. While it is somewhat old fashioned in the choice of songs, I like the fact that the songs
are there to put the scales to use. I also like the variety of new rhythms and bowings that they get comfortable with by the time this book has been completed. Students will learn to play major scales up to 3 flats and 3 sharps in first position in this book.
Book 2 is great for learning the same scales including their relative minor in three forms, and using third position to play two octave scales.

teacher of violin and viola

I have used this as the first scale book for my students for years. It teaches one octave major scales up to three sharps and flats, using first position only. It introduces a variety of rhythms and bowings, that the student might struggle with at first, but will master by the end of the book. A special addition is that every scale has about 4 songs in that key so the student can apply what has been learned. I like that he insists on the use of 4th finger on the descending scales, which is good preparation for playing in positions where the use of 4th finger is required.
