Applebaum, Samuel - Scales For Strings - Book 2 for Violin - Belwin/Mills Publication

I like my students to do this scale book after completing Scales for Strings Book 1. I think these scale books are less intimidating to the typical student compared to many of the traditional scale books. In Book 2, they will learn to play two-octave major and minor keys up to 3 flats and 3 sharps, using 1st and 3rd positions. Students learn about the three forms of the minor scale, but focus on the Harmonic and Melodic minor scales after C major. A larger variety of rhythms and bowings are explored in this book (compared to Book 1). I like that every scale has about 4 songs in that key so the student can apply what has been learned, although the songs are somewhat old-fashioned and not familiar to most students today.

I have used this as the second scale book after using Scales for Strings Book 1 for my students for years. I love how it moves the students from one octave major scales (in book 1) to two octave scales and all three types of minor scales, using first and third positions. It also introduces a bigger variety of rhythms and bowings. Plus, every scale has about 4 songs in that key so the student can apply what has been learned.
