Sonata in G Minor for Violin and Piano or Viola da gamba, by Johann Sebastian Bach
Reconstruction by Klaus Hofmann
The reconstruction presented here is an attempt to take a version of a work that has survived only in the form of a fragment and make it accessible to musical practice once again. The work in question is an earlier version of Bach's well-known Sonata in B minor for Flute and Harpsichord obbligato BWV1030. The autograph of the flute sonata still shows traces of its transposition from the original key of G minor at various passages. The most important means of gaininga revealing insight into the history of the flute sonata, however, is offered by a copyist's transcription from around 1770/80: bearing the title "Cembalo", it is a performance part which transmits the keyboard part of the sonata in an obviously earlier version in G minor. A performance part had no doubt also been prepared along with the harpsichord part, but it has not survived.
This edition includes the violin solo part, a keyboard accompaniment part, and a separate ad lib Viola da gamba part that functions as an accompaniment that can be played with or without the Cembalo part.
