REVIEW VIDEOS

Samuel Barber’s beloved Violin Concerto, composed between 1939-40, was the young composer's first major commission. Requested by soap tycoon Samuel Fels (of Fels Naphtha), the concerto's intended performer was the violinist IsoBriselli, who ultimately decided not to premiere the work himself, due to adisagreement with Barber over the third and final movement.

Fortunately forBarber, the concerto went on to become one of his most popular works. Unabashedly tonal, its opening theme is lushand romantic, its second movement tender and nostalgic, and its final movementfiery and brilliant. The concerto was revised by the composer himself in 1948. It is this corrected, revised edition, incorporating newly discovered details from Barber's personal conducting copy, which is performed so often today.

This G. Schirmer edition is for violin and piano. Includes extensive historical preface.

The old edition is better

While I appreciate some of the edits that have been made, Schirmer has had issues with this publication. The first copy I received the piano score was a complete mess (pages out of order and pages missing). Shar was wonderful and replaced the defective copy. But in addition to that there are several wrong notes printed in the violin part.
