When not in use, magnet holds mute firmly to plastic clip on tailpiece. Non-rattling storage and quick accessibility.

What Should I Look For in a Mute?
All string players should have at least one mute, and there are three important factors to consider. First and foremost, ease of use. How quickly can the mute be put in place or removed? How important is this to you? Orchestral players sometimes only have one measure to install or remove a mute. Secondly, sound quality. The goal of the mute is to lower the volume only, not dampen the good quality of your instrument. Regarding overall sound quality, the degree to which a mute "rattles" when not in use but still on the strings between the bridge and tailpiece is important as well. Third is aesthetics. Truth be told, many players consider the importance of overall look and feel, trying a variety of mutes to find out what works and looks best on their instrument. Fortunately, mutes are not too expensive, so this is a relatively low cost endeavor.

No rattle mute!

Finally, a mute that I can leave on my violin throughout a performance! The magnet prevents the mute from vibrating when not in use and leaving it on my violin prevents me from having to dig through my case to find it each time I need it!

best overall mute Ive tried

Im using this magnetic mute on my viola, and I really like it because it stays in place, is quick and easy to use, and doesnt mute my strings by hugging them tightly. The only negative is that it does rattle a little when playing pure C string loudly, but the positives still make it worth using. I will be buying one for my violin also.

Silent and stable

When performing a concerto or sonata that requires one, nothing beats the sound of a high-quality wooden mute. The trouble with these, though, is that they cannot rest behind the bridge when not in use as many rubber mutes do, thereby making them unusable for the quick mute transitions that occur in much of the chamber music and orchestral rep (think Bartok's "Concerto for Orchestra"). This Bech mute is unique from other rubber and plastic mutes in that it is magnetically anchored to the tailpiece when not in use. This prevents the "buzzing" that happens with other mutes as the legs work loose from the strings. It also keeps the mute located exactly where you left it, making a no-look con sordino as simple as possible.

Works great. Does the job. Stays in place and doesn't rattle when I play.

Best mute ever!

A friend gave me this mute as a gift over 10 years ago, and it's still going strong. It never rattles, never falls off, slips on and off silently, and is really great for very quick mute on/off places. I'm buying one for each of my students this year for holiday gifts!
