Renowned pedagogue Shirley Givens' series for beginning violinists is widely respected for its clear, child-friendly format, and its sensible progression through techniques. There are lots of pictures, fun and familiar songs, and even pages for coloring! Ms.Givens uses a "Movable Do" system to teach pitch relationships and good intonation. Recommended for very young children.
Book 2B, Skipping Halfway Up Fiddle Hill, the young student constructs the Major Triad (DO-MI-SO), plays the tuning interval DO-SO and double stops. Clear string crossing is reviewed, natural harmonics and dynamics are introduced. Many songs and duets using the Major Triad are presented.

Shirley Givens is Professor of Violin at the Peabody Conservatory, the Juilliard School, and at Mannes College The New School. Her countless honors include the Presidential Scholar Teacher Recognition Award by U.S. Secretary of Education, Margaret Spellings, in ceremonies at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.
Internationally recognized as an artist-teacher and passionate about the careful nurturing of violinist-musicians, Shirley Givens has never lost her dedication to the vitally important area of beginning teaching, which remains close to her heart. A growing number of fine young violinists have benefited from her joyfully unique method.
