Having placed second (1908) and first (1913) in the Prix de Rome, a famous composing competition, it is no surprise Russian conductor Igor Markevitch described Lili Boulanger as "...the greatest female composer in the history of music!" (Preface)

In this Edition Schott, four gems of Boulanger's small output are individual works, though they can be performed together as suites of two, three or four movements where required. D'un matin de printemps (1917) is one of Boulanger's more popular works, a spry scherzo that she later rearranged for piano trio and for orchestra. The second piece, Nocturne (1911), is simply beautiful, full of interesting chromatic harmonies and even a nod to Debussy's Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune. IntroductionCortège (1914) follows as a set of character pieces, the slow introduction juxtaposes the swift Cortège. The final title in the volume, Pièce (1910), had only survived until now as a manuscript and is one of Boulanger's earlier known works. Even so, this early work demonstrates her ingenuity as a composer and a "...willingness to experiment with harmonies that might be associated with the Wagnérisme that was then fashionable in France..." (Preface).

In three instances, the editors Elisabeth Weinzierl and Edmund Wächter have chosen to base their new editions on the first editions; original manuscript scores, manuscript copies, and alternative versions have only been consulted for potential clarification of editorial queries.
