REVIEW VIDEOS
Der Schwanendreher, by violist-composer Paul Hindemith, is a concerto for viola and orchestra based on medieval German folk songs. Composed in 1935, it was premiered by the composer himself the same year. Each movement is based on a different folk song, the last movement being a set of variations on "Seid ihr nicht der Schwanendreher?" (literally, "Aren't you the swan-turner?"), a song about a street-vendor who cooks swans on a spit for a living. The orchestration is unique, omitting violins and violas to give the solo viola a better opportunity to shine. This edition is for viola with piano reduction. Published by Schott Music. Difficulty: ASTA grade 6
