REVIEW VIDEOS

Developed by Australian violinist and pedagogue, Andrew Baker, with a simple goal in mind: Create rosin that allows players to be their best. The process was anything but simple, and involved study, exploration, discovery, and endless testing.
The Original Recipes
Leatherwood Rosin is formulated differently for each instrument, violin, viola, and cello, according to the physical characteristics of each. In addition, there are two recipes available for each: Crisp and Supple, which describe sound and feel of the rosin:
- Crisp: Emphasizes a sforzando attack, clear articulation, defined sautille bowing, and a precise and resonant sound
- Supple: Rounder attack, seamless bow changes, and a lush, warm sound.
Bespoke Blends
Since the crisp and supple formulas became available, Andrew has customized blends of the two formulas for individual requests. The most popular mixtures are now readily available to Shar customers in 50/50 supple/crisp blends for each instruments, as well as 75/25 in 75%-supple or 75%-crisp blends.

Must have

I decided to purchase this rosin after a friend at a summer festival let me use theirs, and I was blown away at the difference it made to my tone immediately. If you want to maximize your sound, this is 100% worth every penny and more. I chose the mostly crisp because my violin is a bit slower to respond, but the mostly supple is rather crisp too. The rosin and its container are aesthetically beautiful, and the effects of it are immediately perceptible, even in recordings with bad microphones. $86 may seem expensive, but it is less than a set of strings, and much less than a bow upgrade. I send my immense thanks to Andrew Baker for his incredible work.

The best

Leatherwood rosin is stunningly good. I use different blends for different bows. My heavier, Peccatte-style bow likes the 75% crisp blend, while my ultralight Arcus carbon fiber bow prefers the supple version. With either rosin I get a deeper, more resonant sound. E-string squeaks are virtually eliminated. The bow bites when I need it to, and it glides beautifully and effortlessly with a warm sound that never turns thin. True, this rosin is absurdly expensive. But - like the brutally overpriced Pirastro Korfker shoulder rest - it's simply worth it. and in the big picture, spending 80 buck every two years on rosin isn't actually that bad.
