REVIEW VIDEOS

Pirastro Flexocore Deluxe Cello Strings are designed to fill a need. Concerned with the high price of strings for students, Pirastro instructed its designers to craft a less expensive set of strings that were still at a high professional level of quality. Flexocore Deluxe is the result.

Professional strings must have good playability and sound. You need warm and round A and D strings, and powerful G and C strings. Flexocore Deluxe has both, because the designers combined solid steel and chrome steel for the A and D strings, and tungsten and rope cores for the G and C.

It’s hard to make student-budget strings sound this good, but the effort was worth it. Flexocores are professional grade. And now, instead of using the same expensive cello strings for years and years, students can replace their worn-out strings when they need to. High quality at a reasonable price.

Excellent quality string

Like many cellists I like a darker sound for my instrument, but it is challenging for the A and D string because many lower tension, darker sound strings get muddy in thumb position. I have tried the Pirastro Eudoxa (gut) and had that problem and the D’Addiro Pro Arte (nylon) was even worse. When Pirastro replaced the Aricores with Obligato (nylon), I was never impressed. I found the Obligatos to sound almost like guitar strings, not at all what a cellist wants. I have used both the Larsen Soloist and Larsen’s il cannone warm and broad and liked both of them, the il cannone I liked better, but it is pricy. I have the Bianca cello, which is a great intermediate level instrument, but it needs help from a quality string when in the upper register (by that, I mean anything above the middle harmonic. I gave the Flexocore Deluxe A a try a few years ago and really liked it, and decided to give the D string a try. I still use Aricore (nylon) strings for the D, G and C. I would say the the Flexocore D sounds just like the Aricore D, but with the advantages of being a steel string that can be used with a fine tuner. Like nylon core strings the Flexocore Deluxe strings are lower tension, so they are more comfortable to play when up in thumb positions.
In terms of sound they have the same round, darker sound nylon core strings have, but with the greater clarity and projection you get from steel in the upper register. And, unlike the Aricores, Pirastro is currently making them. I have played Sicilienne by Paradis, The Swan by Saint-Saens, a couple of the Bach Suites, plus Elegie by Faure and I have been pleased with the sound. The Flexocore A and D have produced a clear and round sound on the upper notes of all of those pieces.
