REVIEW VIDEOS

The distinctive Leonhardt sound defines this violin - powerful, balanced, dark, rich and "old sounding". Crafted from native tonewood carefully tended for years in the Leonhardt Workshop.

The Leonhardt Workshop, producing quality bowed instruments since 1926, is situated in the small town of Mittenwald. This center of South German lutherie has a 350-year tradition of violin making. The Leonhardt workshop has graduated from its humble beginnings to an atelier of master craftsmen. Shop founder Anton Dietl was succeeded by his son-in-law Wilfried Leonhardt – himself son Mittenwald luthier Fritz Leonhardt (plucked instruments). Wilfried Leonhardt has in turn been followed by his own son, master luthier Rainer W. Leonhardt.

Rainer Leonhardt learned violinmaking in Mittenwald and took the journeyman exam in 1982. This was followed by several years working at various well known violin shops to enhance the knowledge of building, repair, optimum tonal adjustment and bow making. In 1990, he received his master's certificate from the Chamber of Crafts in Munich. He won the award for best European participant in the European Association of Violin and Bow Makers Competition in 1997. Considering Rainer W. Leonhardt's passion for excellent craftsmanship, it comes as no surprise that he is also manager of the renowned Mittenwald Museum of Violin Making.

lacks projection

Clear sound on all registers but lacks projection. I compared it against John Cheng reserve model - John Cheng is significantly better

Very sweet violin

I have been playing this particular violin for about a month now, and it is a beautiful sounding instrument. I had a Ming-Jiang Zhu Workshop Conservatory Violin and a John Cheng Limited Series violin on trial along with this violin. The Ming-Jiang Zhu violin had a slightly louder projection in the first position but lacked the clarity and beauty of the Leonhardt in the higher positions. The John Cheng was awful sounding. Perhaps there was something wrong with the set up of the instrument we tried, because it was absolutely dead. The Leonhardt violin had a lovely feel from the very first time I picked it up and has a very sweet, clear, and beautiful sound. I can only imagine it getting better with age. It is certainly a big step up from my previous instrument. Playing this violin makes practice time even more enjoyable.
