REVIEW VIDEOS

Pierre Rode’s Twelve Etudes are excellent practice material for violinists who wish to further refine already advanced playing skills. Indeed, since these etudes assume a playing level well beyond that required to effectively approach the 42 Studies by Rodolphe Kreutzer and are more advanced than Rode’s famous 24 Etudes and Caprices for Violin, Op. 35. Their satisfying-to-play musical style also makes them fire preparation for playing classical and early romantic repertoire as well as effective tools for developing precision and stylistic playing qualities often sought in orchestral and other auditioned playing positions. Hence, the intent of this publication is to create a practical new edition of Rode’s Twelve Etudes that highlights their long-time, tradition-based merits as well as relates them to modern playing needs.

Pierre Rode (1774-1830) was born in Bordeaux, France, where he studied with Andre-Joseph Fauvel between 1780 and 1788 and performed as a concerto soloist at age 12. He then studied with the Italian J. B. Viotti in Paris, and, after making his Paris solo debut in 1790, he successfully premiered the latest violin concertos written by the extensive international performance career as well as wrote the first of his 13 violin concertos within his lifelong published output for the violin. Rode was often absent from Paris but yet served as a professor of violin at the new Paris Conservatoire 91785-0 and briefly as the solo violinist for the Paris Opera (1799) and Napoleon’s private orchestra (1800) while at the peak of his popularity in Paris. He also enjoyed wide popularity when he served as solo violinist to the tsar in St. Petersburg (1804-1808). Afterwards, he continued to widely perform, but both his audiences and fellow musicians found that his playing had deteriorated while emerging violinists such as Charles Lafont gained favor. Living in Berlin between 1814 and much of 1819 and the resettling in Bordeaux, Rode unsuccessfully attempted to reestablish himself as a soloist, but continued to compose, including the Twelve Etudes for solo violin, before he suffered a stroke and died.
