REVIEW VIDEOS
Bernhard Romberg, German cellist (1767 - 1841) has been esteemed to be the cello equivalent to the great composers of the violin school, Viotti, Spohr and Paganini. He was recognized to be a remarkable virtuoso known for his beautiful sound, musicality and elegance. Dynamic markings were of utmost importance to him. Romberg made significant improvements to the cello itself which allowed him to excel as a virtuoso. He built on Boccherini’s technical ideas and was known as the greatest master of the thumb position. Romberg collaborated with Beethoven whose influence one can note especially in his beautiful slow movements. The famous German music critic Johann Friedrich Rochlitz published a noble sentiment, to his taste - versatile, but devoted only to the deserving - to his well-tried, reliable and profound art… Romberg is today proclaimed by the entire musical world… the most accomplished of all living violoncellists… Since the time of Mozart, the most discerning audience has never been as greatly enraptured by any other artist, both as a performer and a composer….” Romberg is truly one of the great grandfathers of the cello. Studying Romberg is essential to the creation of solid cello technique and musicianship. I have learned this both as a performer and teacher. I dedicate this edition to the memory of my beloved husband Myron Bloom, horn player par excellence, who was always playing with the cello in his heart, to L.F., brilliant musician and dear friend, and to all my students who have assimilated Romberg into their playing and have gone on to outstanding careers both as soloists and in major orchestras. - Susan Moses, Bloomington Indiana, December 2021.
This edition contains the solo part and the accompanying piano part. The violin part and the piano part were edited by Susan Moses.
