“This book presents a series of projects targeting a single technical, theoretical or musical aspect present in several familiar holiday tunes. It singles out a particular aspect prominent in each tune such as the syncopated rhythm of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, the flat-5 passing tone in Silver Bells or the diminished 5th in Santa Claus Is Coming To Town. The tunes are not presented in song-book format and the "directions" are designed to guide students through the projects largely by ear. Charts of complete melodies with chords are included as an appendix. The book is beautifully illustrated and should be appealing to young students. Concepts included in the projects include: chopping, third position, 4th finger development, "hi" 3 development, scales and arpeggios, internal key changes, chord progressions, Sicilienne bowing and sub-dividing. This book contains material that is accessible to all levels of playing, note-reading, by-ear playing and understanding of theory. There is definitely some material easily accessible by beginners and definitely some projects that would challenge more advanced players. Use what you can this holiday season and then put the book away, take it out next year and go further!”
