Pricey, but worthwhile upgrade from Dominants

Like many, I've been playing Dominants with a Pirastro Gold Label since undergrad when my violin professor recommended that ubiquitous combo. It's been a couple decades since, and in that time the offerings for strings even in the Thomastik-Infeld line alone have multiplied. Recently, my luthier recommended giving Rondos a try. I was reluctant to bite the bullet, but when Shar offered them on sale, I jumped. I wasn't particularly impressed at first - they seemed to have some of the brassiness the Dominants possess before breaking in fully, but were missing some warmth in the low end. I swapped the E for a Warchal Amber forte, and immediately the set came to life. Whoa! Round, full-bodied sound, but with clarity and immediacy in the attack. The upper register is huge. There are recognizable family traits - despite the higher tension, these still feel comfortable and springy, and have classic Dominant-like warmth in the lower-mids, but are capable of much, much more volume and dynamic contrast. "Soloistic" is the word that comes to mind. I'm about three months in, and they just seem to get better and better. I may try the Dominant Pros next time to see how close they come at a price somewhere in the middle, but if I get the long life promised by these, it might be a wash. Highly recommend these for longtime Dominant players looking to experiment!

Really great strings

I had a couple of sets of new Rondo strings in my "string drawer" and apparently a year ago I put one set on a violin that I had bought new some 53 years ago and then forgot about it for a year. WOW - the best this violin has ever been. So I got some more sets and put them on 2 other violins with equally good results.
These will probably become my forever "go to" strings, but since I have been in a "string-trial" mode since 1970, I can't promise!

Phenomenal strings

I upgrade to rondo strings from dominant strings. Wow! What a difference! My violin produces such a warm, rich sound now! I wish I would have made the switch earlier.

Rondo Violin strings

These are very unfocused and almost have a buzzing quality to them when you first put them on. It's very distracting. I have had them on now for about 2 weeks and they are starting to have a warm and focused sound.

Trying something new

The Rondo strings work very well with my fiddle. It’s the fiddle that makes the decision! Thanks.
