I love this piece because it takes both the audience and performer through a wide spectrum of emotions and musical expressions, from tragically lyrical themes of longing and pining to hurried and fast-paced forays. Walton also makes use of the entire range of the viola, and the concerto's technical demands are some of the greatest in all viola repertoire. A true masterwork for viola, and a necessary part of the serious violist's music library."

This updated edition, released in 2002, incorporates editors' markings from previous editions as well as newly examined sources. Based on the new William Walton Edition, it is edited by Christopher Wellington, with piano reduction by Geoffrey Pratley and viola part revisions by Frederick Riddle. Published by Oxford University Press.
