REVIEW VIDEOS
Although much ambiguity remains with the piece, Wieniawski's Fantaisie orientale, Op. 24, is a delightful showpiece, receiving less attention than deserved! Achievable for advanced and even developed intermediate players, this work concentrates a variety of colors and sonorities, extended techniques and unique harmonies, into, according to the editor, Tyrone Grieve, a "highly stimulating setting." Wieniawski's miniature rhapsody is bursting with character and virtuosity without sacrificing "technical approachability" and "poetic enchantment."
Composed sometime in the 1860s or 1870s, Fantaisie orientale was dedicated to renowned violinist, Jeno Hubay, but not published until 1885, 5 years after the composer's death. In this edition, editor Grieve reconciles inconsistencies between earlier editions and, on top of multiple fingerings and bowings, provides a generous wealth of history and commentary in the preface. "In short, this miniature is fun to play, regardless of its performers' playing level."
